Slaughter Slough Kiosk to be Unveiled on May 21st
Murray County is in the process of planning a kiosk unveiling at Slaughter Slough on Friday, May 21, 2010. The unveiling event is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. with a short program recognizing the historical significance of Slaughter Slough.
The new informational kiosk, made possible through a grant partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, tells the story of the conflict that took place there in August of 1862.
Slaughter Slough , now a field near Currie, was once a place of horror and pain. But on May 21st, it will be a place of remembrance and reconciliation. The event will honor the ten Lakota boys who rescued eight Shetek captives in November of 1862. Tribute will also be made to the Dakota people and the white settlers who once called southwest Minnesota their home.
Remarks will be made by Barry Christenson of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as well as Richard Bryan, of the Dakota and Karla Abbott, representing the Lakota. Larry Peterson and Dr. Richard Carpenter, relatives of the original Shetek settlers, will also speak at the event.
The event is open to the public.
