Diary of Orrin Brown, Savannah, Georgia
Wednesday–Dec. 28th
It is a little cooler this morning, we have had several pretty hard showers today so that our camp is very muddy. I have done considerable sewing todday fixing up my tent cloth. Read 7 Chapt. in Testament today.
So what were the headlines of the nation on the 28th of December, 1864? The Evening Telegraph reported from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania:
- Report on Kilpatrick’s cavalry in Georgia, dateline December 12.
- Report from Gen. Sheridan’s cavalry on a raid into the Shenandoah Valley of western Virginia as part of ongoing pressure on Richmond and Petersburg, dateline December 27.
- Report on the ill-fated attack on Ft. Fisher in Wilmington’s harbor.
- Report on Thomas’ troops pursuit of Hood after the Battle of Nashville.
- The Stock Market was performing”dull and unsettled”, but government bonds were holding firm, indicative of confidence in the Federal war effort.
- A sample case of California wines was advertised, for shipment to any part of the country, for $7.
