When I’m motoring along I-90 I try to stop over at Spearfish, on the north side of South Dakota’s Black Hills. It’s a nice small town where the modern motorist’s amenities haven’t managed to cannibalize the historic downtown Main Street.
Recently Main Street got a rebuild and the community got streetscaping to go along with the new pavement. The got to keep their diagonal parking, and added street furniture, bollards, more street furniture, kiosks, an outdoor fireplace… enhancements abound.
I suppose the Main Street merchants would rather I came in and shared their air conditioning and my purchasing power, but I couldn’t help just sit down outside and watch the world go by.
Well done, Spearfish. Well done.
