I love a good conspiracy theory. I don’t believe them. Not the DaVinci Code. Not Raiders of the Lost Ark. Not even Monty Python and the Holy Grail. None of them.
But I’m still fascinated.
What is it about hidden knowledge that can drive men to the brink of insanity—in the case of the best movies, beyond that line? Rationally, I shouldn’t waste my time. Men have a hard enough time organizing ball teams let alone a secret cabal to run the world’s governments. And face it, we’re just not that good at keeping secrets. In fact, I should be offended, since the best conspiracy theories aside from the Grail always feature secret members of the Masonic Lodge, of which I have several in my family tree.
Yet I continue to be drawn in. To wonder at the what-might-have-beens. There’s a similar attraction in the realm of alternate history. What if the South had won the Civil War? What if Jesus had had a daughter? What if I was the long lost heir to the Kingdom of Atlantis?
The thing, for me at least, isn’t that any of these things are. It’s that they could be. Somewhere in some alternate universe, the South did win the War. Christ lived beyond the Last Supper. And given an infinite number of alternative universes, in one of those I am the King of Atlantis….and somebody in our universe’s timeline kept me from my Holy Grail.
Remember: Just because I’m paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get me.
